The Mission of Ashland Church

 We, as Ashland Presbyterian Church,
responding to God's love, are a dynamic fellowship of faith and worship.  Following Christ's teaching, we are committed to sharing God's word and resources with the people of local and global communities.
Trusting in the Holy Spirit, we are enabled to serve as disciples according to our God-given gifts.

A WARM WELCOME TO ASHLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

We appreciate your interest in our church and invite you to join us in worship each Sunday and to consider making this church your spiritual home.   From the Sunday after Labor Day through the Sunday before Memorial Day, our Contemporary Worship Service is at 9:00 a.m., and the Traditional Service begins at 11:00.    Communion is served the first Sunday of each month.  A Special Music Program is featured on second Sundays during the traditional service.  Sunday Christian Education programs for children and adults begin at 10:00.

Our sister church, Iglesia Getsemani, holds their Spanish language worship service on Sundays from 2-5:00 p.m., and on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7-9:00 p.m. in our Fellowship Hall. They also have choir practice on Monday evenings at 7:30 and twice-monthly prayer vigils from 10 p.m. Saturday through 4:00 a.m. on Sundays.  Pastors Jose and Silvia Diaz welcome everyone to join them.

Visitors are always welcome at Ashland.  Here is a summary of the church programs.  Please explore the website for more information on the Ashland family.

Worship

Both traditional and contemporary styles of song, prayer and proclamation contribute to a rich and inspirational worship experience at Ashland Presbyterian Church.  In 2003 an informal contemporary service was added at 9:00 Sunday morning, followed by the more traditional worship at 11.  During the summer months, traditional worship begins at 10.   Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month, and at various other times throughout the year.  The Lenten, Easter, Advent and Christmas seasons are celebrated by all at Ashland, with wonderful music, plays, litanies and more to enhance worship.

Music

There are many opportunities to participate in music worship at Ashland Church.  The Contemporary Worship Team leads the early service in songs of praise, accompanied by a variety of instruments.  The Adult Choir sings at the 11:00 service, often joined by guest soloists.  The Ashland Hand Bell Choir performs several times each year during worhsip, and a Children's Choir is organized in the Fall and Spring to sing for special services.  All but the children's Choir practice weekly.  Newcomers are always welcome.

Music worship is further enhanced by a monthly Special Music Program, which features professional musicians performing with the choir.  Guest artists have included outstanding vocalists, a harpist, brass ensembles, a Bluegrass band and more!

Christian Education

Our goal in Christian Education at Ashland is to continue our spiritual journey toward understanding God, seeking truth and responding in faith to God's love for us.  Scripture is at the core of our programs, and we offer a variety of educational experiences to enable persons of all ages to grow as Christians and develop a vibrant faith.

Sunday School classes are offered for children starting at age 3.  An excellent teaching staff enhance age-appropriate, interactive and multi-dimentional curricula with a stong empasis on community and mission.

Adults meet for Bible study, discussion and special activities on Sunday mornings.  A small group explores Scripture on a personal level through lectio divina.  Others gather informally during the Sunday School hour to consider topical issues.

The Ashland Youth Group provides opportunities for fun, fellowship and service for middle- and high-school students.  The Director of Youth Ministry organizes group meeting most Sundays and at other times for special projects, outings, retreats and mission activities.

Congregational Care

Members of Ashland's Congregational Care Committee are in touch with the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of church members, and work with the pastor to address them.

Congregational Care activites include making hospital and home visits, providing home-cooked meals to the sick and home-bound, sending cards and making phone calls, and sharing prayer concerns in worship.

Fellowship

Members, families and friends also enjoy "pot-luck" meals, concerts, nature hikes, baseball games, ice-cream socials, dance parties and special holiday events together.  Work parties are organized regularly to maintain our buildings and grounds.

Women's Association

The Ashland Presbyterian Women's Group meets monthly, September through June, for Bible study, lively discussion, warm fellowhsip and mutual support.  The women invite the congregation to join them in various mission projects throughout the year.

Mission

Picture of a house and store supported by a church project in the Phillipines.MISSION:POSSIBLE describes Ashland's "can-do" attitude and commitmnet to mission outreach locally, regionally and around the world.

At home, we lead projects for Habitat for Humanity in Baltimore, and support local and Presbytery-wide agencies, including Crisis Pregnancy Centers, homeless and battered women's shleters, and United Churches Assistance Netowrk (UCAN), among others.

Abroad, Ashland partners with church, educational institutions and self-development groups in Africa, Cuba, Guatemala and Nicaragua.  The church and our Sunday School children have "sponsored" and maintain an on-going relationship with a family in the Phillipines.  We also provide direct assistance to people in crisis through the Medial Benevolence Foundation, Save the Orphans Ministry in Africa, and Presbyterian Disaster Relief.

Since 2001, Ashland Church has served as regional coordinator for PROJECT LINUS.  Project Linus volunteers provide lovingly hand-made blankets, quilts and comforters to sick and traumatized children in hospitals and shelters.  Project Linus workshops are held monthly at the church, and blankets are delivered throughout the Baltimore area.

Ashland Preschool Center

The Ashland Preschool Center offers kindergarten, nursery school and childcare for 2, 3, 4 and 5 year olds, including full and part-time programs, five days a week.  The school operates on the philosophy that each child is a unique creation of a loving God, with amazing potential for growth in spirit, mind and body.  The school is intended to be an extension of - and a resource for - the family.

The school is licensed and MD State Department of Education approved, and is staffed by personnel who meet the criteria of the licensing agencies.
